Question
Motorcycle Repair: Harley exhaust..backpressure cylinder volume, drag pipes, harley exhaust

Hi mike..  made my own exhaust.tacked it all in place where i want it.  rear pipe is alot longer than front.  want to baffle the pipes to dampen the Db.  but heres the question.  how important is it to place the baffles the same distance from the exhaust valve on each pipe?  ive read about backpressure and each cylinder sensing the same volume before hitting an obstruction being important for your engine in the midrange.  is this true? or can i just place the baffles in the ends of the pipes with no worries?  thanks Mike..in advance.

Answer
For an exhaust to work at its best, on both cylinders, the pipes should idealy be the same length. Being the same length doesnt always look the best, however. Without a baffle in the exhaust you have dreated a drag pipe. Drag pipes work great at high RPMs but hurt midrange. That is the reason for the baffle. You can install your baffles at the end of the pipes. You might want to consider adding torque cones to your pipes which will give you better performance as well
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
