Motorcycle Repair: Not your expertise but probably can answer, fuel guage, turn signals

Question
I had my battery stolen. They sliced up the cables. I replaced the + cable to the best I know. I replaced the - cable with a used one for my model. I put all back together and started my bike. It ran for about a minute and quit. I checked it over and found that I have no turn signals, and no fuel guage, which I guessed there was a grounding problem. I checked the main fuse- it has power. I have it running, but it is running rough. I had a mechanic look it over and he threw up his hands and could not find any problems. I came back home and purchased a wire harness for my bike and replaced it, it didn't change a thing. I think it might have to do with a ground on the wires coming from the battery or the regulator(I am not sure-just guessing). Any ideas? The bike is a suzuki gs450a. It has been a cherished ride with little problems and it is rare.

Answer
Your first sentence is the key here.  Replacing the + cable to the best you know; typically the + cable powers the main positive line into the loom, and then a big fat cable to the solenoid, only used for starting, and then paerhaps another depending on the way the regulator is wired in.  You need to make sure that all the systems are getting power, and this varies between different bikes.

If everything was OK before the battery was stolen, then I'd be looking at the possible changes since that event.  Even if the bike is rare, somebody who has one should be able to take a picture of the layout and send it to you?

Good luck,  Jan
