Motorcycle Repair: Stripped Oil Drain on 84 sportster, oil drain plug, steel inserts

Question
What should I do, can I do, or is the best thing to do in this situation. The oil drain is off the primary case. I know I can tap it but will have to crack the case to get all the shavings out? Is a helicoil really a good answer for something that has to be used as much as the oil drain plug. its an 84 harley iron head sportster.

Answer
I dont like heli-coils in places where you are removing a bolt alot. They tend to pull out. I use steel inserts, which will hold better. You can drill it and tap it while its together. Put some grease on the drill bit and tap so the shavings will cling to them. Once you are done flush the primary several times and you should be fine
Good luck and happy riding
