Motorcycle Repair: Starting Problems on 1983 HD FLHT, havock, neks

QUESTION: I own a 1983 HD FLHT 1340CC I have to jump the bike everytime that I start it and just today it started dying on me while slowing down.  Is there a trick to actually getting the bike into Neutral also.  Thanks

ANSWER: There is no trick. Some harleys are a bear to get into netural. The problem is there is really a small space between 1st and 2nd. You can try a different synethetic oil and that might help
As to the bike running. Start the bike and at 2000 RPM what is the voltage at the battery?

Answer
Your bike is not charging. Now you need to test the stator. Unplug the regulator and at the pins for the stator do a OHMs test from pin to pin and pin to ground. If it passes then start the bike and at the stator do a AC volt test. At 2000 RPM you should show around 60 volts. If it doesnt pass the above the stator is bad, if it does then the regulator is bad.
