Motorcycle Repair: FXWG starter, starter shaft, battery cables

Question
1980 FXWG with electric an kickstarter,4spd.Mike,starter is not engaging properly. Put on a new solenoid as the old one went south.Starter motor turns but drive gear does not engage properly ,hit or miss with a lot of grinding till it catches then starts fine.Shaft has about an eighth inch wiggle at the end that goes into the pimary case, also have a brass spacer on end of shaft next to primary cover. Is this necessary.? What do you think let loose? Do I have to remowe the oil tank to rebuild the starter shaft or is there a trade secret. This old shovel is just full of suprises. Harold Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
First, chck the battery cables. If they are old and cracked, replace them. have the battery tested if its old. Lastly, check the timing. to far advanced and the starter will kick in and out. The brass spacer you are refering to is a shim and yes, you need it.
If the above doesnt help let me know.
