Motorcycle Repair: 1988 fxsts repair ?, cam lobes, lifter

my 1988 harley started to smoke back cylinder.  i heard it cost around 800.00 to rebuild top end. does this include parts. my other ? is by rebuilding top end only would this hurt bottom end. on my bike the bottom end is quite and bike runs strong except for the smoke. thanks rick

Rebuild the top end will not hurt the bottom end at all. Since its a 1988 I would check the cam lobes and replace the cam bearing and check the lifter bearings.
As to the cost. I cant comment on that. Prices differ all over the country as well as shop to shop.
