Motorcycle Repair: 03 xr70r, valve seals, oil consumption

Hi im a 2stroker but i got this 03 xr70r for my step son i picked it up when it was cold just a few weeks ago it seems to run ok for a 70 but it smokes cold or wormed up but starts the first kick but it is cold harted like a honda 4 stroker is  should i rebuild the carb and go from there before i go and buy a top end for it ??? thanks joe

If it is smokey, does it smoke while under power, during acceleration then it is worn rings, or on overrun, or when you shut the throttle, it is likely to be valve seals.  If the bike runs fine, makes no noises and does not smoke excessively, I'd leave it and just keep an eye on the oil consumption.
