Motorcycle Repair: Storage hints for the Goldwing, storage hints, notch shape

Question
Hi Jan,
I am a snowbird and have a carbureted Goldwing 1999 vintage. I will leave it in a hot climate for 6 months during the Arizona summer. What should I do in order to protect the bike so it will be in top notch shape when I return in October? I'm most concerned with the carburetors and what should be done to them.
Thanks, Ken

Answer
While you can drain the carbs, the risk is that all the rubber dries out and then you have to deal with leaks when you return.  What I have done before, is to drain all the gas, fill it up with diesel, and store the bike with diesel in the carbs as well as the tank.  You have to drain everything before you start it back up, but everything is nicely preserved by diesel fuel.

Some people use stabil, but this has been known to form crystal needles according to some people, and seafoam is another additive to stop the gas from going off, that has been used but I have no personal experience.  There is no subsitute to running the bike once a month...

Good luck,  Jan
