Motorcycle Repair: MY 1964 Honda CL72, rear sprocket, thread pitch

Question
Bill actually 2 questions. One-an article I read said there was a
gearbox ratio difference between Hawks and Scramblers I think the only difference is the number of teeth on rear sprocket?
Two-Should I rejet my bike when I remove baffles from my CL72 and if
so what size jets should I use in 22mm carbs?
Thanks
Terry

Answer
CL72 questions....!!!!  Bring them on! :>)

Terry,

Some people have written the the transmission ratios on CLs were X'd from the original CB72 pattern. I have not found that to be the case. The X gear procedure is helpful for Scramblers, especially CL72s that tend to bog down in the 1-2 gear shift. You have to pull the motor and split the cases to do that conversion, however.

Yes, the sprocket gearing is different, due to a number of factors.. 19" CL wheels vs. 18" CB wheel sizes, gearing for acceleration in off-road conditions vs. gearing for top speed.

If your bike is totally stock (engine, air filters) and you pull the baffles, first buy some good earplugs!  Snuff-or-Nots are back in production, so those will help knock down a few DB of sound. The stock jetting may be sufficient to allow the engine to run with no baffles. If it flattens out some, try adding a little choke when it does that and then go up one step on the main jet to correct. Make sure that you get the correct thread pitch jets when you go looking for them. The ones with the circular groove around the outside of the jet are ISO thread pitch, NOT the JIS thread pitch you need for your bike.

I have put extensive amounts of information about CL72-77 Restoration on CDs. They are for sale, if you need them, through my website.
