Motorcycle Repair: Oil filter replacement, oil filter housing, cbx 1000

Question
I have bought a old CBX 1000 that was in pieces. When reinstalling a new oil filter. Does the spring inside the filter casing go on the end of the filter against the crankcase or the outer end where the securing nut is?

Answer
Hi,
Good luck with the rebuild!  In fact there should be a spring and a washer, and they should go in the following order:  Put new 'O' ring on the bolt, and install bolt in the oil filter housing.  Then install the spring, then install the washer, and lastly put on the oil filter.  Change the main 'O' ring around the housing and install with the thicker web engaging in the cutout in the crankcase.
So the spring pushes the oil filter against the engine.  Good luck,  Jan
