Motorcycle Repair: S&S super E carburator, air fuel mixture, crane ignition

Question
QUESTION: Hi there,
I have a high comp. (10.6/1) 88" evo engine with supertrapp exhausts,1-1005 crane cam, crane ignition and S&S E carb, the carb. spits on idle sometimes and then the engine dies , if i set the idle very high it keeps rolling.bike runs fine , just bad idle.
Carb. does not respond to idle jet changes also.
Tried a .295, run good, tried a .31 and also a .33...ran also good but idle keeps going up and down, now matter what jet i use.
I think the carb is worn out,it has 45.000 miles now. is this possible? I checkt for air leaks on the manifold, 100% sure it is tight and has no air leaks.cleaned the carb several times also,Idle mixture screw looked worn when i took it out.thx up front for the help :-)
regards,
John

QUESTION: I assume you mean that i did grind the valves, yes we did .
The engine is healty and has perfect compresssion, no leaks at all.

Answer
Your problem is probably your cam. that cam has a really hight lift and long duration. At idle the valve are close to overlapping and that is probably causing the spiting. Try drtarding the timing a little and that might help the problem
Carbs sont usually wear out. They might get plugged with dirt, but there is really nothing to wear. You can get a leak in the inrichner or the needle in the air/fuel mixture can get damaged, or the o-ring around the needle goes bad

Good luck and happy riding
