Motorcycle Repair: 1981 flt oil out filter, crankcase breather, wet sumping

Hey Mike,  In stop and go traffic,(idling very hot) my 81 flt starts pumping,literally pumping oil out the air cleaner.  I know about wet sumping after sitting a while, but what is going on.  I inspected the oil pump and even the local dealer said it's internals looked mint. Then it happened again. If the check ball is bad will this even happen after the shovels are running a while? Thanks for your time.  Scott

Your oil is coming out the vent, which goes to the air filter. There are two possible reasons for this. One, is the return side of the oil pump, even though it looks good, is not pumping fast enough. the other reason can be is the crankcase breather gear is worn.
