Motorcycle Repair: 1976 fxe, kick start, internals

i have an fxe stroked to a 1340 with 4 plugs for better combustion.Whomever owned it last took off the kick and went to all electric..Now I am having a problem with whirring and grinding when I try to start it.I am thinking about putting back on a kick start so that at least if I cant start it with the key I can kick it ..Any thoughts on this ?

I am not sure which part you need answered so I will do both.
the kicker can be put back on without a problem. You would just need the cover and internals for the cover if they are missing.
As to the whirling problem, does tne motor turn over when you say its whirling or does the starter just spin?
