Motorcycle Repair: Eccessive Oil out of Breather

Question
QUESTION: I have an 88 Softtail with an S&S 96cu inch motor.
I changed the cam shafts over the winter.  The cam and breather are indexed correctly.  Since then it has been blowing oil more than just a little bit out the breather.  The motor has only the old style crank case breather, not the heads.  Do you have any idea where I should start looking to fix this problem.

ANSWER: When you say oil is blowing out the breather, how much oil are you talking? Also, what cam did you install?

QUESTION: About a quart in 300 miles.  All the oil coming out occurs after start-up and also puddles when shut-down.

The cam shaft is a S&S 600.

Thanks!
Matt

Answer
there are two possible reasons. The cam you installed is a high lift cam and it is causing blowback in the bottom end. You can fix it by installing the crankcase vent made by S&S. Its a reed type vent. the other thing could be your oil pump, return side, is worn and not pumping the oil back fast enough and to mucj oil is staying int he bottom end.
Good luck and happy riding
