Motorcycle Repair: Testing stator, maximum gap, honda sl 125

Question
I have a 1972 honda sl 125 . What's the best way to check the stator? When I got the bike it had no ign. coil points cover was missing, stator wire unpluged , I'm thinking there may be a firing problem. What would be Ohm's of resistance on stator? Any info. would be helpful. Thanks Roger.

Answer
Roger, the SL125 has a battery operated ignition system. Install a fresh 6v battery before going further. Point maximum gap is .014-.016" then move the points plate so the points open at the F mark alignment on the flywheel/stator marks.

The stator recharges the battery when the engine is running. Normal checks on the stator with an ohms meter can be basically checked to see that there is continuity between the stator leads, but NO continuity to the stator mount frame itself. The rectifier has diodes that can be checked in positive and reverse polarity modes. Should flow low resistance in one direction and high resistance in the reverse polarity.

Early 100-125s had issues with loose camshafts in the head, causing instability of the points and timing. If the cam is loose in the head, then you won't be able to time it correctly.
