84 Harley FXR
Hi again Mike! Until I can get my hands on a manual, I need to know the procedure for adjusting the primary chain on my 84 FXR. (I attached a pic of my primary cover so you can see the style inspection cover on my model.) Also, can you confirm the OEM Harley part numbers for the front and rear master cylinder rebuild kits? I need to know the OEM numbers to cross-reference to the correct aftermarket kits. (I think the discontinued OEM front was p/n 45063-82 and the rear was p/n 42382-82, is this correct?) Any recommendation from your experience which kit is best? Is DOT 5 fluid the only way to go in a Harley or will DOT 4 be OK? Lastly your opinion? What do you think of the aftermarket wide glide triple tree conversion kits for my narrow glide 35mm fork legs? Any particular brand you might like better than another? Any detrimental issues? I think I want to get the wide glide "look" but don't want to give up the great ride of my stock fork legs, they ride soooo smooth! Thanks again! JR.

Answer
Your rear one should be 42374-82A.
To adjust the chain, remove the inspection cover from the center of the primary. Check the chain. It should flex about 1/2 inch. If its to loose loosen the nut in the center and slide the bracket up. Do this while the bike is upright so you dont loose any primary fluid.
Use only DOT 5 brake fluid.
You can use about any wide glide triple trees. They are all about he same, jsut depends on how fancy you want. Your ride should be fine
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
