Motorcycle Repair: Honda CRF 80 Flooded?, honda crf 80, compression stroke

Question
I am sorry for such an ignorant question, but I just purchased a CRF 80 (used) for my son for Christmas.  I am trying to keep it started at least once a week until then.  First time, no problem.  Tried starting it tonight...turned the key, turned on the gas and lifted the choke.  Was giving it gas while trying to start it and had it started a couple of times, but only for about 5 seconds.  I guess I have flooded it.  What or how do I go about getting it started?  Do i just let it sit for a while and then try again?  Again, sorry for such ignorance.

Answer
Chuck, I have a couple of suggestions for you....

First, check the valve clearances.... maybe no one has and the valves are tight..  .002" cold on intake and exhaust, set on T mark of the flywheel.. compression stroke.

Drain the old gas out of the tank and carburetor. It doesn't last more than a few weeks now.

You may have to pull the float bowl and find the idle jet (#35 markings, I think) and clean it out.

Buy a fresh spark plug for it.

Just put the choke on about 7/8ths and kick it. Don't give it throttle until it starts running a little.
