Motorcycle Repair: Turn signal-Brake lights, turn signals, electrical issues

Question
I have a 1982 CM450E.  When I apply either front or back brakes while the turn signal is operating, the turn signals stop flashing.  What could cause this?

Answer
Hi Bob,

It could be a couple of things.
First, I suspect your battery/charging system is weak and when your brake light comes on, it drains so much from the electrical system that the signals can't function properly.
Another thing it could be is a bad ground on one of the wires.
Whenever anyone is having electrical issues the first thing I recommend is going through every connector, front to back, disconnect them, clean and re-connect.
Next, check the voltage of your battery. It should be around 12.5 volts with the bike off. Check and see what happens when you turn your signals on and apply the brakes. Then try it with the bike running. If the battery is bad, it will drop pretty quickly.
