Motorcycle Repair: Blow back, crankcase breather, straight pipes

Question
QUESTION: Hi Mr. Wells,  I have a serious blow back problem that caauses me to lose 1 qrt of oil in less than 100 miles of travel at high rpm. I own a 1989 flhtc 1340 cc evo twin engine.  the only tthing i did was divert the hose that comes from the crankcase to the air cleaner because the blow back was too much and constant throughout my rides. I simply diverted the hose down.  Now its creating a mess. what can be done if anything, because some say that the blow back on tthis model harleys is normal ( not a qrt loss however.)

ANSWER: Your crankcase breather is probably worn and oil is getting past it. What you need to do it remove it and mic it. You will probably have to go oversize. S&S also make a breather that works better than stock, which you can install
Good luck and happy riding

QUESTION: I'm only a half-of wrench and would ask your advice if I can attack this job myself.  I'm not absolutely sure where, or how difficult this task may be, but I  will research it or simply take your advice. I have gone as far as successfully replacing the head gaskets, and replacing parts as covers and mufflers etc. Are there any intriquet adjustments that has to be made when replacing the breather element. Also I put straight fish tail pipes and was advised to put retriction cones in the mufflers. Is this necessary?

Answer
You can probably do the work yourself without problem. If you need a oversize breather you would have to hone out the hone or get somebody to do it. they only make standard and .030 over. I would get a service manual and in it you will find how to do the work.
As to the pipes, I would put in the cones. If you run straight pipes you loose horses in midrange. The cones will help bring the horses back up
Good luck and happy riding
