Motorcycle Repair: 74 harley sportster electric start right side shift wont start, harley sportster, damn bolts

Question
OK here is the story/question sorry if its a lil long

now all i gotta do is figure out how to get her running again
the symptoms are just plain whack and got me stumped

im waiting on some parts to come in
parts im waiting on are
new battery ground
battery to solenoid and solenoid to starter cables

i figure its probably something from the battery to Solenoid that's my problem

since when it works it makes a kinda click sound not like a breaker going off but like something engaging then the starter does its thing and the engine starts up great but now the starter cable gets no power

i tried running a jumper wire from the battery to the starter and the starter spins but doesn't engage and try to turn the engine over it also doesn't make that same sound as when i push the starter button and it all works like it should.

i searched for a short or loose wire but from what i can tell and poke at they seem fine and attached just dirty and old that's why i figured might as well spring for the new wires they didn't cost much and even if there not the problem its not gonna hurt to have em.

i think my main troubleshooting problem is the damn bolts on the oil tank are all funked up and stuck i cant loosen em for the life of me i tried wd40 and then wrenching around but there just aint much room tah try much else and with the oil tank there, well there's just not much room to look around and mess with stuff.

its crazy the bike ran great started real easy i go to a friends house and i cant get it to start i clean everything i tighten everything i pull the battery i check it i charge it i put it in still nothing

so i end up having to leave it there and go back the next day i roll it outta the garage i try it again push the starter and still nothing no green gen light no sound nada all the lights headlight blinkers etc are working just no start up, well i roll the bike halfway down the driveway and ask my friend to come help me push er up the hill so i can just try and jump it to get it home, and before his lazy arse comes out to help me push er up the hill i press the starter button one more time and wow like magic she starts right up..

i leave ride to the gas station stop try to start er again when im done and nothing i go ehh damn it i go inside take a leak come out try again and it works wtf...

i ride home she runs fine i park er in the carport..
i go out the next day i cant go ride since i got my lil girl with me but started the bike up to let it run for a few min anyway she started and ran great. i stopped it went out the next day to go ride pushed the button and nada and its been that way since , i hate letting it sit and not ride the longer it goes without being started the more gimped up shit seems to get ... ehhh me oh my i don't wanna pay the shop to do allot O nothing again

Answer
When it does it check to see if you have power going to the starter solenoid from the starter relay. If you dont the relay is bad. If you do, check to see if you have power going fromt he solenoid to the starter. If you dont the solenoid is bad
Good luck and happy riding
