Motorcycle Repair: 1970 XLH Carb issue, air fuel mixture, rubber insulation

Question
Hello Mike. I have another question for you.  I just rode my bike today for the first time in 5 years{70 XLH). It did fairly well actually, but I know the carb needs adjusted.  It is a Zenith/Bendix with a 2 year old rebuild kit in it.  I would greatly appreciate knowing your "by ear" method.  I mean, after I start it, at what rpm should I adjust which screw, and what do I listen for?  The carb has 2 screws on top of it(not counting the idle rpm screw}.  One is close to the air cleaner and the other ids close to the intake mounting flange.  Which is which?  Also, do you know where I can go online to find a drawing of the carb?

P.S. Want to here something funny(not to me)?
Went for my first ride in a long time today with my 2 day old battery installed. It seems the pos. terminal came up against the oil tank fitting and vibration caused it to rub through the rubber insulation. You know what happened next. Oh yeah!! BOOM, right between my legs. Acid everywhere.Top and one side blew completely off but thank God the metal batt cover contained the energy of the explosion.  Between My freaky starter problem and battery explosion, I'm beginning to wonder if the bike is trying to tell me something about being tore apart for a few years.

Answer
Start the bike and let it warm up. Set the idle at around 900 RPM. The screw at the rear is for a air/fuel mixture. Slowly turn it inward, just until the bike starts to stumble, and then outward about 1/4 turn. The other screw is for the main jet. I would leave the main jet screw alone, if the bike is running good.
Sorry to hear about the battery. Good thing you didnt get acid on you.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
