Motorcycle Repair: lower rpm on hwy., rear sprocket, hyw

Question
I heard you can change rear sprocket and it will lower you rpm on hwy? I have a shovelhead 4 speed , 51 tooth rear sprocket ,can I change it to lower rpm on the hwy?

Answer
If you want to lower your RPMs on the hyw you would have to either go smaller on the rear sprocket or bigger on the front sprocket. If you do this you will rev the bike a little more to get going and the RPMs wont go up as fast
Good luck and happy riding
