Motorcycle Repair: 79 lowrider charging system, charging system, stator

Question
when riding my bike it stalled and would not start.only has kick start and head light was dull waited 5 min.it started and drove about a half a mile stalled again waited about 5 min again and drove.did this about 5 or 6 times till i got home.than charged the battery and load tested it was fine.i think the charging system it not working how do you check to see if its the regulator or the stator

Answer
First, charge the battery and start the bike. At the battery, you should be showing about 13.5 volts at 2000 RPM. If you are below that then your charging system is not working. What you need to do is test the stator. Unplug the stator, and at the stator pins do a OHMs test. If its grounded then it bad. If it passes, then do a AC volt test at the pins with the bike running at around 2000 RPM. You should show about 60 volts. If the stator doesn not pass the above tests then its bad. If it passes then the regulator is bad
Good luck and happy riding
