Motorcycle Repair: starting problems, harley sportster 883, starter relay

Question
QUESTION: I just bought an 87 Harley Sportster 883 although the gentleman had it bored to a 1200. When I try to start it, it sounds like the starter is trying to engage but wont. If it were a car I would say the bendix is stuck. It had not been started in 7 months. It also had a small hesitation before trying to start when you pressed the start button. I already took the starter off but I don't know what I am looking for. Please Help

ANSWER: Is it just clicking?

QUESTION: Yes, it sounds and feels like it is coming from the piece right next to the starter. I put my hand on it and could feel the click.

Answer
First, make sure you have a good battery. If you have a weak battery it wont turn over. Next, with a test light. check the wire coming from the starter relay going to the starter. When you hit the starter button you should get 12 volts. If not the starter relay is bad.
Good luck and happy riding
