Motorcycle Repair: 73 CL350, scrambler 350, exhaust gaskets

Question
My exhaust collars are 3/4" away from being flush with the head, which is where they should be I think. Bought circle exhaust gaskets, which diagram shows inserted first. The two half circle shims seem to stick out 3/4" for some reason and they are correct I believe about 1"/ 1"1/4 wide. Should the exhaust rings go around the shims? Thanks. Your advise has been fantastic on the forum. Huge help.

Answer
Peter, the exhaust pipe gaskets to into the cylinder head, where the compress and seal the exhaust gases against the the flange ends of the exhaust pipes.

The sequence is

O gasket === header [  ] exhaust collars [] exhaust flange (joint) ... studs, lockwashers and nuts

I hope that is clear for you.

Glad to hear that you are using my advice effectively.
