Question
QUESTION: I purchased my bike used from the dealer 1.5 years ago.  It only has 12,400 miles on it. I have put 1000 miles on it since ownership. It had been running fine until I didn't start it for 3-4 weeks, and the battery lost it's charge.  I charged it, and took it to 2 different places to have the battery checked, and they said that it was fine.  Bike won't start, but it will crank over.  I checked the fuses.  No problem.  I installed new spark plugs. Spark Plug wires are 1.5 years old. I am getting gas to the spark plugs, but it appears that I have no spark because I tested them by removing them from the head and kept them in the wires, then held it against the motor while starting to see if I could see anything on the electrode.  Could it be the ignition control module?  If so, can the module be tested separate from the bike. I'm really puzzled, and determined to fix this myself.
Thank you so much for your help, and I really appreciate your time in answering me.

ANSWER: Turn the ignition on and at the hot side of the coil do you have 12 volts?

QUESTION: This may be over my head.  I don't have a voltmeter.  Is the ignition coil on my 1998 rectangular, and located where the spark plug wires are attached, and 2 other wires plus the ignition key switch cylinder in the front side of the gas tank?  If that is it, is 12 volts good or bad?
Thank you.

Answer
You should have 12 volts at the hot side of the coil, with the key on. Yes, the coil is located under the tank where the plug wires go. If you have 12 volts there, then you would need to test the pickup, located behind the cover on the cam side
Good luck and happy riding
