Motorcycle Repair: sportster, intake leak, speed jet

Question
hi Todd
i have a 93 883 that has had the carb rebuilt 2x new plugs an tank drained an cleaned. it does not want to stay running,if the choke is left pulled out alittle it will run until you try hit the throttle it back fires out the pipes. it has always had to sit an run 10 min in the past or it died if you tried to take off any sooner.hope that is enough info. thanks

Answer
When you rebuilt the carb did you remove the low speed jet and insure it is not plugged, did you notice the size, if it is stock I'm guessing that it is a size 42. It will run better with a 45. Also you could have a intake leak either where the intake mounts to either head or where the carb meets the intake manifold. Start the bike and let it idle now spray carb cleaner on the before mentioned areas if the bike stalls out that was your problem. If these suggestions don't take care of the problem I would check out the ignition module and striker plate next.
