Motorcycle Repair: STUCK EXHAUST VALVE, clearence, exhaust valve

Question
Hey Mike,I have a 73 shovel and the bike runs like it is out of time but it happened once before and the valve was stuck. Could you guide me through adjusting them. Also it seems to happen when i run the bike wide open on the highway is there anyway to prevent this from this happening again.I really need to start working on the bike myself cause the shop is getting time consuming (trailering)and annoying.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
If your valves stick, then they are to tight in the valve guides. There is a clearence that needs to be between the valve and the guide. Having the proper clearence is the only way to keep a valve from sticking.
As to the adjusting of the valves, are you running hydrolic lifters or solids?
