Motorcycle Repair: twinstar, troubleshooting diagrams, safe bet

Question
Hi Bill, you sure are busy
I still am having problems with the lights on the twinstar 185...I now think it is the rectifier. Anyway...what about changing this 6 volt system to 12v....I heard it can be done but I am unsure of what to change.

Answer
Allan, you weren't very descriptive in saying what kind of "problems" you are having with the lights.  The lights depend in a fully charged battery, so if you have a weak/dying battery, the whole charging and lighting system is going to be in an unbalanced condition.

The CM185-200s are somewhat related to the CM250 from 82-83 that are equipped with a 12v system. To change over you would have to replace:
Battery (if it is a similar size) 12N9
Reg-Rectifier
Stator and rotor set
All the light bulbs, including the sealed beam headlight
The Horn

Parts probably cost more than either motorcycle, unless you were able to find a junked one somewhere that had all the parts you needed.

I suggest that you fix what you have... take your time, look at each part, follow the troubleshooting diagrams at Electrosports.com

http://www.electrosport.com/technical-resources/library/known-issues/street_4050...  Even that model isn't a safe bet for reliability, apparently.
