Motorcycle Repair: voltage regulator prblem? or what else?, voltage gauge, radio cuts

Question
QUESTION: 2003 Ultra Classic, 12,000 miles. I bought it last summer. Stage one but no other engine work.
Above 2000 RPM my voltage gauge spikes past 16, the speedo slaps back and forth, the odometer blinks, the radio cuts in and out and the red engine light comes on. I load tested the battery (just because it has been around a while). It is in great shape.
I would rather not pay the dealer to pick up the bike and do whatever, if I can diagnose and fix. Ideas?

Thanks

ANSWER: What you need to do is test your stator. Do a OHMs test on both wires and then a AC voltage test on the stator, with the bike running. You should have about 60 volts at 2000 RPM. If the stator passes, then the voltage regulator is bad

QUESTION: I don't mean to sound dumb but is the OHMS test on the plug that snaps in to the Voltage regulator coming from the case? do I go red to pin and black to ground, hoping to get no reading? Do I do the AC voltage test on the same plug? Yes, I am that uneducated on the Harley. I have always been able to work on my cars. I am not sure why this has me so unqualified.

Thanks

Answer
What you need to do is unplug the regulator. Now you have two wires from the stator. Go from one wire with the OMH meter to ground. Should be no OHMs. now do the same thing with the other wire. When you do the AC volt test, use the wires coming from the stator
Good luck and happy riding
