Motorcycle Repair: 68 xlh sportster, xlh sportster, clutch basket

Question
Mike,
I recently picked up a 68 xlh.  Have been riding it and noticed I am getting a noise from the primary case when I pull in the clutch to shift.  Almost sounds like the primary chain knocking??  I had to replace the clutch cable as it was broke, could it be a simple adjustment?
Also where would I check and fill the primary oil?

Answer
Check yoru chain adjustment on the primary. If its to loose it will make a noise. If that doesnt solve the problem I would check the motor sprocket nut and the clutch basket nut for tightness.
On the primary, there is a bolt towards the bottom of the case close to the front. That is the fill level. remove the chain inspection cover and fill with oil until the oil runs out that hole
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
