Motorcycle Repair: karata belt drive, starter solenoid, return spring

I have a 1984 1/2 FXRDG.2 questions:1/I installed a Karata belt drive(dry primary) and the bike labors to start with spark plugs in(plugs out turns over fine).It appears as though my bendix is hanging up on my ring gear(new starter/solenoid)return spring is installed. Any ideas?
Question 2:When I ran a chain drive(wet primary)the bike leaked very badly between the mainshaft support bearing(bearing pressed into inner primary) and the inner primary case. The factory used no seal here (press fit). Any help on this one?

Couple of things to check. Make sure you have good connections on the battery, both positive and negitive. Check the battery and make sure its good. A weak battery will cause your problem. Also, make sure the cable are good.
On your primary, according to the book, there should be a seal there.
