Motorcycle Repair: No Start, starter solenoid, foot pegs

Question
I have bike that was customized and chopped in 2001. The engine is an 86-inch shovelhead. The primary has been
converted to a late model style to run a belt or a chain (I run a chain)and it has a 6-speed transmission. Last year I lowered the rear foot pegs and replaced the taillights. It has always had electric start. Since late last summer I have continued to have issues with restarting after riding. The problem is intermittent but occurs in the following manner:
Bike will start fine. Can ride for a few miles or hours and miles and park and restart...no problem...OR...can ride only a few miles or a few hours and miles and when attempts to push starter switch it clicks but does not start. Have at times been able to push start but sometimes that does not even work. The first time this happened I had the starter replaced. The second time this happened I had the "defective" replacement starter replaced. What next? This continues to happen intermittently. I was told it could not be the starter switch because it clicks when I attempt to start the bike. Have also been told I "just need to ride it more" (?????). Who wants to go anywhere on a bike that does not want to restart, has to be left where its parked only to come back the next day or a few hours later and it cranks just fine?
Any insight you can offer to this dilemma would be GREATLY appreciated.

Answer
Your clicking is the starter relay. There are two things that can be wrong. One is the relay itself, not sending juice to the starter solenoid. the other is the solenoid itself.
What you need to do is test the relay. You would have to get the bike so it doesnt start. There is a wire going from the relay to the solenoid. Push the starter button and with a test light, check to see if power is going to the solenoid. If not then the realy is bad. If it is, then check the solenoid and see if power is going to the starter. There will be 3 wires on the solenoid. One, the small one, is from the relay, one is from the battery and they other sends power to the starter.
Good luck and happy riding
