Motorcycle Repair: petcock valve, braided fuel line, sportster 1200

Question
Hello Mike,
First I want to thank you in advance with any help you can give me. My
boyfriend has been busting his a%$, for 3 days trying to fix this for me. He
moved my gas tank on my 2004 sportster 1200, to do something and turn
the fuel switch to off, after replacing everything it started up great and we
had it running while we got our jackets on to ride. My bike stopped running
in the meantime. He forgot to turn the switch back to on. Since than we
trying push starting it and anything else you could think of. Still no luck!
Since than he has bought a new petcock and the filter thing? (small test tube
looking thing with mesh screening and plastic that goes into the tank) "Sorry I
know nothing about bikes, just learning a little now" anyways, he has
everything hooked up but I guess now the problem is the fuel line seems to
have a kink in it and the bike will start but doesn't stay running! and I guess
the line is hitting the heads and will melt. so is there anything he can do with
the existing parts or new ones to make this work? He is like most men and
wont stop and ask for directions, and Im trying to do my part to make it
easier on him since its my bike and I appreciate everything he's doing. I want
to be able to help! He says he'll need a braided fuel line with a natural 90
degree angle to it,and thats suppose to do the trick.. Is he on the right path?
or is there something you can suggest for him, is there another problem all
together? Again, thanks for any help you can give.
Sincerely, Heather. (Jealous girlfriend stuck at home on a beautiful day
because my bike wont go and he's out riding. Could've went but put enough
hours in riding the fender and my tail bone cant do it anymore.

Answer
First thing you need to do is check to make sure the vaccumn line if hooked to the percock as well as the other end of it and its a good connection. Without the vaccumn the petcock wont open, even though you have it turned on. If you have a kink in the fuel line just twist it so the kink is out. the line touching the heads will not melt, they dont get hot enough to do that.
the one way to make sure you have a gas flow is to disconncet the vaccumn line, disconnect the fuel line and open the petcock. you would have to put a vaccumn on the petcock to get it to flow so you can hook a small hose to the fitting and just suck on the line. No gas will come out the vaccumn line, so you dont have to worry about that
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
