Motorcycle Repair: 78 superglide doesnt start, starter solenoid, clutch gear

Question
i have a 1978 superglide and out of no where it just stopped turning over, i took off the cover that houses the starter gear and when i push the solenoid the starter gear doesn't line up with the large clutch gear. when i tried starting it before it just made a clicking sound, do you think if i just put it in gear and got the two gears to line up it would start? or maybe just a faulty solenoid?

Answer
What you need to do is take a test light and pushing the starter button and see if there is power going to the starter solenoid from the relay. If not, the the relay is bad. If you do then, check to see if power is going to the starter from the relay. If not, the the starter solenoid is bad
Good luck and happy riding
