Motorcycle Repair: 1986 Honda Rebel CMX250, honda rebel cmx250, rebel 250

Question
Hi Bill, I am currently restoring a 1986 honda rebel cmx250 and am not getting any spark from either coil although the bike is turning over but just not starting. I was wondering if there were any common problems before I started changing parts. I am assuming both coils would not fail and the same time that is why i am seeking your assistance. Thanks- Tim

Answer
Tim, GOOD first assumption! Honda coils seldom fail and two would not fail together in a million years.

The most likely cause would be a failed pulse generator

a failed CDI control module

or a dirty KILL switch

Disconnect the KILL switch harness wires first and see if the spark comes back.  If NO
Check the pulse generator wiring. You can test the pulser coil using an ohm meter for continuity statically or test for a low voltage signal when cranking the motor over. If OKAY

Then, probably the module has died.

Use fresh plugs to test for spark.. CDI sparks are quick and thin, sometimes hard to see in bright daylight.

The ignition switch grounds out the sparks, so you can try a test where you disconnect the ignition switch and kick the motor over by  push starting it with the plugs out, perhaps.
