QUESTION: 2003, 1200  has stock CV carb with stage 1 kit, vance and Hines pipes.  I have owned the bike for about 4-5 years and it always ran great.  I let my son in law have it as long as he took care of it.  That son came to pass as he ran the oil low, dirty as ___-and the air filter was so black it was un-real. He was shown how to take care of the bike. I share this to say since I've gotten it back it has not run right.  The intake leak might just be one of a few troubles I am just starting there.  Bike seems lean and plugs stay clean.

ANSWER: What method are you using to determine that you have a intake leak? When you say it does not run right, how is it running?

QUESTION: to determine if it has a leak we are spraying w-40 around the intake manifold and the heads.  At 1/4 throtal it seems to spit.  spark-plugs won't change color even when we jet it so that it should be running rich.

Answer
the best way to see if you have intake leak is to spray a little carb cleaner around the intake. If you have a leak the RPMs will go up.
Your spitting problem could be from timing is off, a burned valve from running it low on oil and it over heating, a exhaut leak, or a vaccumn leak
Good luck and happy riding
