Motorcycle Repair: boiling batt, stator, pole to pole

Question
Hello again Mike,my bike is a 92 dyna glide coustom.I did the check of the stator as you asked,i get 55-58 ACv,however when i checked pole to pole i had no ohm reading,my meter went on 2k ohm setting from 1- open to .000 when i placed probes into poles on stator.I takit this is ok?i put another used regulator on it.thats all i could affored, and it now goes to 19v @2000 rpm,is this ok?What should i get at 2000rpm.is there a way of checking the regulator.i was thinking Mike, can i put a resistor in line to only let out 16v max?Or will it still allow my head light to blow?Thank you so much for your time ay,i really appreciate it.

Answer
When you chaeck pole to pole on the stator you should show some resistance, so your stator is probably bad. 19 volts is still to high and you will have a problem with the battery. You should be getting around 13.5 volts at the battery at around 2000 RPM. There is no test for the regulator. What you do is test the stator and if it passes then the regulator is bad. I am not sure about the putting the resistor in. I have never done this and never heard of anyone doing it, so I am not sure it it would work
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
