Motorcycle Repair: Cannot upshift while riding..., honda shadow, upshift

Question
I ride a Honda Shadow and I am having problems upshifting. When I park the
bike and fiddle with the gear shift by hand, I can get it to go into 2nd, 3rd and
4th. What would be the reason for having so much trouble upshifting when
riding?

Caurlos, trouble shifting can come from a dragging clutch, a gear shifter out of adjustment, or linkage that needs lubrication.  I'd suggest starting with the simple things first. Lube the linkage, check the linkage to maks sure the lever is clocked on the shaft correctly.  There's a dot punched on the shaft and on the lever.  You need to make sure those are lined up.
