QUESTION: I have an 87 flhtc, when I ride for awhile and the bike is warm, sometime I have trouble restarting the bike. I hit the starter and get nothing, after it cools down it will start. I've had this problem for years. New stator, regulator, starter, battery, solenoid, relay, wiring just about everythimg but a new starter switch. What do you think?

ANSWER: So yoru saying when you hit the starter button it doesnt try to turn over? You hear no clicking like the starter is trying to kick in?

QUESTION: Sometimes a hear a click sometimes I don't, when I do the relay is just clicking.  The bikes voltage guage will either max out or go to zero when I try to start it.  I just confirmed that the battery hold about 13 volts when idle, drops just a hair when the lights or turn signal on.

ANSWER: What is your voltage at the battery when the bike is at around 2000 RPM?

QUESTION: 13 volts, don't have much off a voltage drop, could it be in the switch housing, or something to do with the bikes voltage guage?

Answer
Start by checking your battery cables. Make sure they are good, not worn and have a good ground. Next, test the stator. Since you say you have 13 volts at the battery, that is a little low.
After that take the bike for a ride and get it good a warm. Once you get back take a test light and at the small post on the starter solenoid see if you have power when you hit the starter button. If you dont, then the relay is bad. If you have power, the check at the big posts on the starter solenoid for at least 12 volts with the cable removed from the starter. If you do then you would need to remove and test the starter.
Good luck and happy riding
