Motorcycle Repair: gearshift, gear shift linkage, clutch friction

Question
I have a 1983 honda vt750c shadow. I put clutch friction plates in and now I can shift up all the way to sixth gear but can not shift it back down to first. is there some adjustment that needs to be made in the shift linkage? if there is how do i do it?

Answer
Theres no adjustment other than the indexing of the gear shift linkage on the shifter shaft.  You can check the indexing by the small punch mark on the shifter shaft and the smaller shifter lever on the shaft.  Make sure those two punch marks are lined up.  There is a turn buckle adjustment but it only controls the height of foot lever.  It should not influence the up or down shift.  You didn't need to change any of that mechanism to change the clutch.  Assuming you didn't change anything, you have something reassembled incorrectly under the clutch cover.
