Motorcycle Repair: 1996 Harley Davidson 883 Hugger, harley davidson 883, reply thanks

Question
Hi Mike, A couple questions on a '96 883 Hugger Sportster I recently bought.First, what is the best way to change out the battery on this unit?I had to do it and after a bit  of frustration I got the cables on,just wondering how the pros do it.I am also wondering how to check the oil in the forks and how to change it if need be.I live in norhern wisconsin so it is a bit cooler, this unit starts hard and does not want to stay running untill it warms up.Is that normal for this model of bike? Also the choke will not stay pulled out when used,I have to keep it in place with my hand.I wonder if that is the way it is supposed to be.Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your reply. Thanks again.  Mark

Answer
There is no really easy way or any quick steps to changing the battery. Its a pain!
You dont have anyway to check the oil in the forks, unless you just drain them. There is no dipstick. If you change the oil, you have to have teh front tire off the ground. On the side of the fork there is a small drain plug. After draining, remove the top cap on the forks and fill from there
You will have a little trouble with the bike until it warms up. they are pretty cold hearted.
On the choke, right behind the choke knob the is a knurled plastic washer. You can tighten it a little and it should hold the knob. Dont tighten to much, or it will break
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
