Motorcycle Repair: 1983 honda nighthawk clutch, 1983 honda nighthawk, old fashion way

Question
Hey rich,
I'm having a problem with my clutch, see the bike runs but it won't let me shift cuz the clutch doesn't work.  When I pull it, it has no resistance.I saw that it was low on fluid so I replaces it and I can see that the hydraulic fluid is indeed going through the hose so I don't know what to do or how to bleed it.  You think you can help me out?

Answer
Jacob, you need to find one of those mityvac vacuum pumps. You can use that to evacuate the system and pull the fluid along with any air.   You can bleed them manually but it's hit or miss. If you want to try the old fashion way, you will need a couple of feet of clear tubing. You need two pairs of hands.  One to pump up the pressure and another one to open the bleeder valve.  Put the clear tubing over the bleeder valve on the brake caliper. Make sure you have plenty of fluid.  First remove the reservoir cover and fill to within 1/4 inch of the top, then pump the lever several times and on the last pump hold the lever in.  With the lever still held in, crack the bleeder screw and you should get a small squirt of fluid out into the clear tube.  Repeat this process until there's no more air coming out into the tube.  When the air is all out the system will firm right up.
