Motorcycle Repair: Honda Ft500 1982 to much air flow, air fuel mixture, stock setup

Question
I have a 1982 Honda FT500 Ascot. I'm getting to much air flow into the motor. Which causes the motor to bog/stumble/and back fire out the Carb. I have to keep the choke on for it to run good. Right now I have tapped up the filter opening and left a hole about the size of a quarter. This allowed the bike to run good with out the choke on. I replaced a damaged rubber plunger. Pulled very thing out and blew air and cleaned the whole Carb. Checked the 140# jet and slow idle jet no problem. I was thinking of going to a 190# jet to get more fuel. Is this wise our could it be something else causing this problem. The bike has about 10K miles on it. Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
The bike as standard had the correct air/fuel mixture.  It sounds like you need to celan some more of the components to get the performance back to stock, before trying to make modifications to fix a problem that should not be there.  Once you have the bike running perfectly with the stock setup, you can start to think about improving performance, but it is silly to try and make modifications to improve things when it is not working as it should.  I would troubleshoot the bike while it is stock to get it working properly first.  Good luck,  Jan
