Motorcycle Repair: idle problem, throttle cable, clunk

Question
I have a cl175 scrambler 72 it has been in storage since 79.I had just purchased it and started it and rode around for about five mins then the idle went really high so I finally had to just shut it down. Any ideas ?

Answer
Chandler, it sound like either the throttle cable is stuck or the slides in one or more of the carbs is stuck,  Start by lubricating the throttle cable and make sure it moves freely.  The pull the tops of the carbs off so you can get to the slides.  Pay attention which carb they come out of and the direction they are installed. The angle cut goes to the back of the bike and there's a slot in the side of the slide that has to line up with a key inside the carb. Make sure the slides and the bore of the carbs are clean. After you clean everything up and put it back together, flip the throttle cable a couple of times and listen for a clunk as the slides bottom out in the carbs to make sure they are going to the bottom of the carb when the throttle is closed.  Also make sure there's a small amount of play in the throttle cable.  There should be about 1/8 inch of play in the cable before it starts to open the slides.
