Motorcycle Repair: stop and turn lamps on Honda Shadow, volt ohm meter, low beams

Question
I have an 86 shadow 500vt. I have no brake lights or stop and turn directionals in rear (I do however have  a tail light running and a license light~so there is power back there). On the front I have a headlight but when I cue directional (fronts only) it stays off instead of blink. All mysteriously happened same time.  I have pulled the stop n turn unit off on the bike and replaced it. That does not solve the problem. Any other obvious places I should start checking?  Thanks for any ideas!

Answer
Hilary,it sounds like there's a problem in the power distribution in the left hand handle bar switch.  The high and low beams and turn signals are in that switch.  THere's a black wire in that switch that is power from the fuse, and it comes out as orange and light blue to the turn signals, brown to the tail lights. You will need to take a volt ohm meter and make sure you have power going into and out of that switch.  If the rear lights aren't working the front lights won't flash.  There's not enough current going through the flasher to heat it up and cause it to open. The brake light goes into the light warning unit in the back under the seat. Have you checked that to make sure it is okay?
