Motorcycle Repair: 1988 Sportster Clutch Adjustment, hd sportster, sportster 1200

Question
Hello,
I have a 1988 HD Sportster 1200. I have adjusted the clutch using the service manual.  The clutch works fine for a miles or two but it seem like the adjustment screw backs out causing the clutch to not disengage.

It looks like the nut under the first nut is damaged a little but it doesn't spin.  Any help would be appeciated.

Answer
Remove the derby cover and under it you will see a spring and nut. remove the nut. There is another nut behind it. Leave it in there. Go to the cable and loosen it so there is alot of slack in the cable. Go back to the clutch and turn the screw in the center of the nut so it tight and then back out about 1/8 of a turn. Put the other nut back in and spring and derby cover. Go back to the cable and adjust it so you have about 1/8 play in the lever and your set.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
