Motorcycle Repair: 1987 FLHTC clutch adjustment, clutch adjustment, locknut

Question
Would you have a simple to follow set of instructions on how to adjust the clutch on my 87 FLHTC. The clutch should be in good shape except I believe it needs to be adjusted. It is drive able but if I accelerate hard it slips. I have a good set of tools and a good place to work on it. Thanks. Del

Answer
If it slips then it to tight. Go to the cable and at the adjuster loosen it so there is slack in the cable. Remove the derby cover. In the center you will see the adjuster. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster outward and then go inward, just until it bottoms out. Now turn it outward about 1/8 of a turn and tighten the locknut. Now go back to the cable and adjust it so you have about 1/8 inch of play in it and your set.
If it still slips then its time to remove the clutches and inspect them for wear.
Good luck and happy riding
