Motorcycle Repair: starting problems, air fuel ratio, trail motorcycle

Question
My grandfather gave me has 75 Honda trail motorcycle. I knew that the bike would not start before I received it but I figured I could it going. I first drained all the old gas then I drain the fuel line to the carb. I then put the carb. back in place. I checked the spark plus and slightly cleaned it and found that it was sparking. The choke, fuel switch, and throttle all are working so I refill the gas tank. I tried many times to kick start the bike but no more than a spit and sputter. I choked, unchoked, gave throttle, gave no throttle, but nothing seemed to work. I then tried to push start the bike but it would spit and sputter and then die once stopped. The key switch also works so I am at a completely stand still. Can you give many any advice, part information, or anything needed to start my bike. Thanks for your time.

Answer
Darren, start by checking the compression on the engine.  If it starts with pushing it, it hints that it may be low on compression.  If that's okay, your problem is in the carb.  You'll need to go back through it and make sure the jets are all clean and the float level is set correctly.  You have to have the right air fuel ratio for the engine to start and run correctly.
