Motorcycle Repair: Gas Mileage, clutch cylinder, ring groove

Question
I got a 1985 VT700 a few months back, The bike has been sitting for a few years. I am restoring it, my question is what kind of gas mileage should I be getting for this bike? I am getting about 100 miles per tank, should I be getting more? also I am having a problem with my slave cylinder, it doesn't always engage or disengage the clutch, There are times when I am out riding, and I stop somewhere, I turn off the bike, and when I come back out, I start it, and when I pull in the clutch, and put it in gear, I let out the clutch, and nothing happens, does that mean I need to replace my slave cylinder?
Please let me know, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you
Kevin

Answer
Kevin, you should be getting about 150 miles to a tank...at least my wife gets that on hers. Jack the front wheel up and give it a spin. If it doesn't spin freely, your brake is dragging which will cut down your mileage.

The clutch cylinder needs to be rebuilt.  It's bound up and the fluid is expanding when the motor get hot.  When you take it apart you will find a bunch of crud inside.  Make sure you scrape out all of the varnish in the o-ring groove before putting it back together.  The varnish is what is compressing the o-ring and sticking the piston.
